Congratulations to our Excel Swimmers, Head SES Open Water Zone Coach Andreea, and all of the Souhteastern Swimming Open Water Zone team for a fanstastic race this weekend in Ft Meyers Beach Florida. Zone teams are comprised of swimmers only in a specific LSC but and are highly selective. Congratulations to our Southeastern Swimming Athlete Representatives for receiving two awards from USA Swimming. There are four Athlete Representative spots in the LSC- The Senior Rep, a Junior Rep and two representatives At Large. This year, our own Alexander White is one of the At Large representatives. Among their other duties is the responsibility to plan and host a leadership summit which they did over the weekend of April 4-6th. Congratulations to our 4 Open Water National swimmers who just returned from Sarasota where they competed in a couple of different distances. We started the weekend off with Campbell Johnson who finished 16th in the boys 5k race with a time of 1:02:12. Up next were our two girls competing in the 7.5k, Zara Kocak and Sarah Carrico. The Southeastern LSC has released the Open Water Zone team and Excel is well represented! Of the 15 swimmers on the team, 3 are from our team. Congratulations to Brooklyn Lewis, Boston Boyd and Henry Schopfer for making the team. In fact, Boston and Henry represent the entirity of our 11-12 Boys on the team. The first annual LLKR (Live Like Kate Rust) 5k race will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at the Bridgemore Village Neighborhood Park in Thompson's Station. The event is being held in honor of Excel Swimmer and TSMS Cross Country Runner Kate Rust who passed away unexpectedly in September. Kate is remembered for her kindness, determination, and the positive energy and joy that she brought to those around her. The Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association hosted their annual awards banquet this week where Excel spent a little time on the big screen. The Female Athlete of the Year was Excel Swimmer Zara Kocak who swims for Station Camp High School. Her incredible performances at the High School State meet where she won the 100 Fly (53.88) and the 500 Free (4.51.73) where enough to earn her this prestigious honor. Every year, USA Swimming offers different select camps both at the Zone and National Levels. While they are all extremely competitive to participate, they all offer a unique experience to many of the very top athletes in the country. One of those is the National Diversity Camp held May 1st through the 4th in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Training Center. One of the lesser known branches of our sport is Open Water Swimming. Open water races can be in freshwater lakes and rivers, oceans or even indoor pools (usually with the lane lines removed). Like conventional swim meets, races can be different lengths but open water meets usually only occur in the summer months. The National Swimming Club Swimming Association has selected their All-Star Team from last week's NCSA Junior National Championships and Excel will be sending 2 of our athletes to compete at the Adam Peaty Race International meet in London, UK. Zara earned her spot by co-winning the 200 Butterfly in a team record 1:58.09 while Bryce punched her ticket in the 100 Breast, also with a team record swim of 1:01.30. Our final two meets of the 2024/2025 Short Course Season are in the books and much like the rest of the season, we have a whole lot to be proud of! While our National Team was split between two different meets, the combined results ended up with a National Champion, new team records, new Winter and Summer cuts and finally two members of the NCSA International Team.
